School, Aviation, and Other Evaluations
In addition to our Clinical and Forensic evaluations, we provide other out of pocket evaluations including school based evaluations or fitness for duty evaluations that cannot be billed to medical insurance since they are not for treatment planning purposes. Psychoeducational evaluations can help assess and plan for educational needs in school or college. They can include assessments of learning disabilities/delays or for admission to private schools. They are focused on assessing learning needs in an academic environment so that we can provide practical recommendations that may include identifying any needs for accommodation.
Evaluations typically include clinical interviews with the child/client as well as family members, school teachers or medical professionals, as needed. School observations and review of school records are often part of a comprehensive evaluation. Depending on the nature of the referral question, these types of evaluations can be brief or include several hours of testing. Testing assesses intelligence (e.g. IQ testing) and academic achievement (e.g. reading, spelling, math). Additional testing for neuropsychological functioning (e.g. executive functioning, processing speed) or emotional or behavioral needs can also be conducted as needed.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and US Military often require evaluation of pilots, air traffic controllers and applicants to complete a neuropsychological evaluation with a board-certified neuropsychologist before being medically cleared to perform duties. Dr. Irani is a CogScreen-AE and HIMS trained neuropsychologist and can conduct timely evaluations that follow established FAA specifications and guidelines. This includes testing for HIMS, ADHD/Learning disorders, suspected neurological conditions, HIV, SSRI and other psychological conditions. About FAA Evaluations
To prepare for an evaluation, please provide the letter you received from the FAA. We will ask you to arrange to have your FAA records sent directly to our office as soon as possible.
The length of the testing varies depending on the nature of the referral, and can last from an hour to several hours. It will typically involve a clinical interview followed by administration of tests selected because they are important indicators of performance in the cockpit. Tests assess areas such as attention, processing speed, problem solving, memory, mood and personality. Performance on these tests is compared to other pilots who have completed the same tasks. Relying on standardized data allows us to be consistent and objective when reviewing performance. Our findings are submitted in a report submitted to the FAA and your aeromedical examiner (AME).
Since this evaluation is meant to satisfy FAA requirements to obtain medical certification, it is NOT covered by medical insurance. These evaluations typically include a clinical interview and mood and personality testing, along with any other tests needed to assess the applicants psychological capability to exercise appropriate judgement and restraint as a certified police officer. This is position of public trust and we strive to provide a fair and objective opinion about psychological capability.
